STUDER COMMUNITY INSTITUTE The Studer Community Institute (SC) is a not-for-profit organization. Based in Pensacola, Fla, it focuses on three areas to improve the quality of life in a community. Early Brain Development, to help ensure every child is ready for kindergarten. Economic Development, with a focus on helping businesses start and grow. Civic Engagement, to tap into national experts who share best-practices on how a community can grow and thrive. With the investment in the Bodacious Shops in Janesville, and with the excitement of the Beloit minor league team becoming part of the new ABC Supply multiuse stadium in downtown Beloit, the Institute will be offering some services in Rock County. These will be based on the needs and wants of the community. SCi builds tools to help reach and teach parents about the power that they have to build their child's brain, especially in the first three years of life. Research says that 80 to 85 percent of a child's capacity to learn is developed by age 3. We know there are many great organizations already working hard in this area. We just want to help where we can. Our next program features Dr. Ronald Ferguson, a well-regarded expert in reducing the achievement gap in children. We hope you will be able to join us as we all learn from Dr. Ferguson. Register to attend this live virtual event! Friday, Nov. 6 6 - 7:30 p.m. CST www.studeri.org/events Creating Better Educational Outcomes For Your Community's Children Dr. Ronald Ferguson is the director of the Achievement Gap Initiative at Harvard University. He has launched Boston Basics, which are five fun, simple, and powerful ways that a family can give every child a great start. The Basics Learning Network calls for collaboration with many partners to reach extended families with caregiving advice for infants and toddlers. This session will share his work and research on The Basics, the achievement gap, raising Successful children and ways to improve K through 12 schools in our communities as part of the CivicCon lecture series. "We know that the ease of learning depends upon early brain development -- a child's orientation to life, their tendency to identify things that they're interested in and become passionately engaged in learning more about." said Ferguson. "So, it's not just how much the child knows, it's the child's tendency to set high aspirations and to be confident enough to investigate and learn things that they initially don't understand." The author of "Toward Excellence with Equity: An Emerging Vision for Closing the Achievement Gap." Dr. Ferguson also co-wrote.
